About us The Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) funds innovative and dedicated clinicians, molecular biologists, geneticists and chemists who seek to diagnose and cure cancer and cardiovascular conditions by identifying and studying the underlying molecular mechanisms of these diseases. The Organization also funds work on the links between obesity and cancer along with a new molecular therapeutics program that will spur the application of the newest discoveries to useful drug or diagnostic therapies for a wide range of diseases. At present, most of the funds collected by SHRO are distributed to the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine located at the College of Science and Technology of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (www.temple.edu). |

Specific research at the Institute revolves around investigations of the cell cycle and growth control, as well as the changes that cause a normal cell to turn cancerous. Much of the work focuses on how disease causing genes alter the normal functions of healthy cells. Investigation into these molecular processes may help doctors to comprehend why certain individuals develop cancer, the future course of the disease and appropriate treatments. The hope is that greater knowledge of these underlying mechanisms will lead to a reestablishment of normal cellular growth in animals whose molecular communication network has been mutated.

In time, this could have important implications for human treatments and cures.
